Corpus Christi parish was founded in 1906, and our school opened in 1907. Centennial celebrations for both parish and school are occurring between the Feast of the Dedication of the Church on October 22, 2006, and the Feast of the Dedication of the Church on October 21, 2007.
A year of preparation and prayer for the centennial began on the Feast of the Dedication of the Church, October 23, 2005. |

"At the beginning of the year 1906, it was evident to his Grace, Archbishop Farley, d.d., that the territory adjacent to Columbia University needed greater and more personal supervision. He, accordingly, having consulted his vicars, who likewise approved the project, proceeded to secure lands sufficient to accommodate the needs of the future parish. Through his agents he purchased the present site and appointed as rector the Rev. John H. Dooley, who at the time was rector of St. Sylvia's Parish, Tivoli, N.Y. The parish was legally incorporated under the title of 'Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, Borough of Manhattan, N.Y., March 7th, 1906. ' " --from the souvenir book of the dedication of the church, 1907
On May 6, 1906, the first Mass was said in the new parish of Corpus Christi. Father Dooley had opened a chapel in the store at the corner of 121st Street and Broadway. Two Masses were read on the first Sunday of May, and the total number present was 226. The rectory at the time was an apartment over the little store-chapel. As a start, the centennial committee's gift to the parish was the cleaning and repair of the two beautiful crystal chandeliers that hang in the church. Since then the church interior has been repainted. The doors have been repaired and painted. The roof has been replaced. The pews and floors have been restored. A new sound system has been installed.
