CORPUS CHRISTI CHAPTER

OF THE

INTERNATIONAL THOMAS MERTON SOCIETY

_________________________________________________________

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12

 9:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

in observance of Merton's baptism at Corpus Christi Church:

     "Baptized into Paradox:

     The Holding Together of Opposites"

The Inner and Outer Worlds of Thomas Merton

                Esther de Waal, retreat master

Esther de Waal is an Anglican laywoman and one of the most popular authors on Christian spirituality today. She is a foremost scholar in the Benedictine and Celtic traditions. Her interest in Celtic spirituality began at Cambridge University where she studied history. While her husband served as rector of Canterbury, she became fascinated with the architecture of the Cathedral (a former Benedictine foundation) and it was there that her deep appreciation for the Rule of Benedict began. In Canterbury, while raising four sons, she studied and wrote on the Benedictine way of life. Seeking God, her classic book on the relevance of The Rule of Saint Benedict, has opened up the riches of the monastic tradition to readers for almost twenty-five years and is a worldwide best-seller. Esther is a devoted follower of Thomas Merton and has published A Retreat with Thomas Merton, a seven-day spiritual journey guide. Greatly in demand as a speaker and retreat leader, she lives in Herefordshire, England, on the Welsh border in the same cottage where she lived as a child.
