Corpus Christi Parish Council Minutes for Meeting of Monday, February 1st, 2010, 7:30pm
Present: Fr. Raymond Rafferty, Tom Croft, Brenda Fairaday, Michael Morrison, Brian Questa, Dorothy Valla, Tom Warren, Robert Meadows-Rogers, Marcia Ruiz. Absent: Sam Bortka, Eileen Canty, Connor Hailey, Francis Paz, Fr. William Wizeman, Catherine Parsons The meeting was called to order by President Tom Croft and opened with a prayer by Fr. Rafferty. Tom Croft announced that Eileen Canty can no longer be an active member of the parish council; she must take care of her own health and the health of her husband. Also, that Catherine Parsons can no longer be the recording secretary. Marcia Ruiz then volunteered to take notes for this meeting & for the month of March. At that time it must be determined who will be the Recording Secretary for the duration of 2010: March, April, May, June, then September through December. A short while was taken to review the Minutes of the meeting of 1/4/10. Tom Croft asked for a motion to approve the Minutes if there were no corrections or amendments. Robert Meadows-Rogers moved that the Minutes be approved. Michael Morrison seconded the motion & the Minutes were approved unanimously. Pastor’s Report, Fr. Rafferty: Fr. Rafferty, along with the building commissioner, and School principal, Dorothy Valla, met last Friday, 1/29/10. It is hoped the work being done on the exterior of the church will be completed in 5 to 6 weeks. It is also hoped that the scaffolding will be dismantled by Holy Week (3/29-4/2) but... Pointing ordered not seen as yet, the two side doors waiting on stones. The front of the building has been cleaned. When you have a moment take a look at it to see how good it looks & imagine what it will be once finished: clean limestone. Money in budget has been provided by the Archdiocese. Water is seeping in through the walls & the damage pre-dates Fr. Rafferty being here (now 12 years+/-). They have identified two places & repairs will cost $70,000 each. New scaffolding will be put up running alongside (side) of building. The plan is to complete the front then do the sides, (rectory, the alleyway and the Broadway side) of building. Robert raised the question if the water damage seepage has decreased, Dorothy answered that it has decreased. Brenda asked a question to which Fr. Rafferty responded with the following…some stones are defective & have been taken out and will be replaced… The annual Archdiocese campaign has begun; all registered parishioners should be receiving mailings about it soon. We reached our goal last year. This year’s goal is $23,000.00 based on Sundays’ income of two years ago. The campaign should be in full swing mid-February with the first mailing going to those who give more & then to the rest. Dates for the social must be confirmed and discussed soon (tentative date given is Sat., April 17). Also to do something for Kevin McGee for the decorating of the Church for Christmas. End of Report. Principal’s Report, Dorothy Valla Catholic school week started today, Monday, 2/1/10, with a Mass. High school acceptances are in. Registration and pre-registration are open. The children collected a lot of money, over $500.00, to donate to Haiti/earthquake relief. The collection will end at the end of this week, 2/5/10. The Cooke Center wants more interaction with one example being a bake sale yes. Last Wednesday a distinguished person who is a sponsor of a first grader visited the School. He insisted that I be his guide to tour the school. He is the retired General Counsel of Verizon. The sponsor is William Barr who worked as Attorney General for President George H. W. Bush. Mr. Barr went to the 4th grade speech contest, “If I was President”. Mr. Barr was a former student here from kindergarten through 6th grade & was an altar server. He spoke with the 7th and 8th grade classes. He will sponsor three more students and will arrange for a substantial check to be given to the School for the refurbishment of the computer lab. Mr. Barr said that he will try to get the $25,000.00 from Verizon. In the website of the Catholic Alumni Sponsorship Regis Philbin gives a video introduction & then the user goes to the school of his/her choice to make a donation. There are 5 or 6 donations so far. When queried about donations for relief in Haiti, Fr. Rafferty replied that the directions from the Archdiocese indicate that money is primary & nothing else. If efforts are geared at small projects, it might be good for small commitments of more money donated through parish efforts such as the breakfast pancakes of Sunday, 1/31. Dorothy added that donating money to Catholic Charities is a good first choice because it is difficult to ship items to Haiti. Fr. Rafferty added that the Archdiocese said not to get involved with collecting clothing, etc, not possible right now (who knows if that will change 6-months from now). The current Haitian population per our parish community and the other walking distance parishes is small. The school lost a few members. The Haitian members of Holy Name & St. Gregory’s parishes do not comprise a large population. Reports from the Committees: The Election Committee: Michael Morrison & Marcia Ruiz are working on the bios; presently have 3 bios and 3 pictures of the 5 nominated candidates. The completed bio sheets will be completed in time for the Parish Bulletin of Sat. 2/13, & Sun. 2/14. At this point, a sign up sheet was passed around for volunteers to cover the election process after each Mass on Sat.& Sun for the weekends of 2/20 & 2/27. The volunteers are as follows: Tom Croft, 2/20, 2/27 Sat. at 5pm. Michael Morrison, 2/21, 2/28 Sun. at 8:30am. Marcia Ruiz, 2/21, 2/28 Sun. at 10am & 1pm. Tom Warren, 2/21, 2/28 Sun. at 11:15am. Liturgy: Brenda Fairaday said that the Liturgy Committee met on Tuesday, 1/26/10. Nicholas Chong is drafting guidelines. Notes for each Mass are being prepared. Willie Malarcher, Deacon, will be leading a training day on February 27 from 1 to 4 pm for lectors & eucharistic ministers. All who are ministers and those “to be” ministers will be invited. It will be a time of fellowship, retreat, prayer and reflection. The aim of the committee is to have this type of reflection twice a year; once in spring and fall. The training will include how to visit to the sick. Education Committee – Brian Questa, Fr. Rafferty & Dorothy Valla met & discussed the concern with Sunday school. The main thing is that more instructors are needed. At the next meeting Brian would like to prepare a flyer to have in the vestibule of the church. Fr. Rafferty says it is too early now for a flyer & it would be better to have one ready for September 2010. In the meantime, talk to people to see if names or actual people are gathered. Brian stated that current enrollment is 30 (public school children). There were 3 teachers but now it is 2 teachers & 1 aide for the pre-communion, communion, confirmation. Maintenance Committee – no report. Hospitality Committee – no meeting but Tom Croft will contact Jane Hart to see how she is doing with her contacts who signed up for the Hospitality Committee. Vespers: Fr. Rafferty – Sunday Vespers now for the season of Lent on Sundays at 4pm. The Vespers flyer was passed around & members were encouraged to take as many as possible & post them in the lobbies of their buildings. Thomas Merton: Brenda reported that about 40 people attended the Merton meeting on 1/30/10. Arthur Biddle spoke about the friendship of Merton & Lax. The information was emailed to Catholic New York with ample time but the announcement was not published whereas previously there hasn’t been a problem. Old/New Business: Fr. Rafferty will not be able to attend the April Parish Council meeting if it goes ahead on the first Monday. Also, the Spring Social should be on the agenda. These items will need to be discussed & resolved at the March meeting by the new Council. Next council meeting scheduled to be: Monday, March 1st, 2010, 7:30pm in the rectory. Meeting adjourned. Submitted by Marcia Ruiz.
Parish Council Minutes Corpus Christi Parish Meeting of Monday, March 1, 2010
Present: Fr. Raymond Rafferty, Tom Croft, Brenda Fairaday, Michael Morrison, Dorothy Valla, Tom Warren, Robert Meadows-Rogers, Marcia Ruiz, Fr. William Wizeman, Francis Paz, Newly elect present are, Connor Hailey, Conchita Gonzalez, Miriam Duran. Absent: Sam Bortka & Brian Questa. The meeting was called to order by President Tom Croft and opened with a prayer by Fr. Rafferty. It was presented today, Mon 3/1 to nominate and vote on who will take on the role of President, Vice President, Secretary of the Council. Several people were asked with Tom Croft, (continue) President, Robert Meadows-Rodgers (continue) VP accepting. For March 2010 meeting, Marcia Ruiz has volunteered to take notes for the meeting. Marcia volunteered to be the Recording Secretary for the duration of 2010; March, April, May, June, & September through December. A few minutes were taken to review the Minutes for the meeting of 2/1/2010. Tom Croft asked if there are any corrections to the Minutes. Marcia stated that as of 2/1 we had 6 candidates but soon afterwards one withdrew so that the nominees decreased to 5. Also, Brenda stated that the Thomas Merton event date was incorrect. Tom requested, with those amendments, a motion to accept the Minutes. Robert moved that the Minutes as amended be approved. Mike seconded the motion & all present so moved - approved. Pastor’s Report, Fr. Rafferty: Fr. Rafferty, stated that he did not have a large report to discuss… (beyond what was discussed in length at the February 2010 meeting; Council members have a copy of those Minutes to refer to)…there has not been a meeting on construction, mid-February canceled because of snow. Dorothy was in touch today, Monday, 3/1, with George, John Delesio. It is quite possible by Easter Vigil that front church scaffolding will be taken down. Right now the front area is dark even with the scaffolding lights on. The biggest concern would be to be able to off the lights for the Easter Vigil should they still be there. Also, how to build the Easter fire if the scaffolding coverage is still there is a concern. Principal’s Report, Dorothy Valla The Pre-K is open and in effect; need 15 more students, fill one full classroom. NY Archdiocese provided 25 schools with a recruitment, professional marketing specialist. On February 22, the person assigned to Corpus Christi, Jose Rivera, formerly of Cristo Rey, Manhattan worked at our school & returned today, Monday, 3/1. On the first day, 2/22, Mr. Rivera reviewed our interviewing procedures, marketing materials, & website which he found to be good. He will be visiting 10 pre-schools in the neighborhood. He will be our “foot soldier, hands & feet” to go to these schools and make us known…within the scheduled time span of much less in the one to two years schedule. The endorsement people on Friday, 2/26 through Thursday, 3/11, 9am; their interests are in the gym windows…have Yes, grant people to give us money for the convent. I was told that they are coming. Dorothy, Michael & Commissioner walked around with a parent…contact precinct…made a date. Art exhibit, have it ready for the parish social, not only display but sell some of the art work as well. Haiti collection from the school is $700.00+. The sponsor, William Barr, retiree of Verizon, is sponsoring three more children & reported that the $10,000.00 check given by William Barr is with the Archdiocese. At this point, Fr Rafferty states that the parish is short of Haiti collection of $1,000.00; having received small amounts here and there since after the earthquake of 2/12. Columbia approached Fr Rafferty for a project; Maxine Griffith’s office still sitting on question. If Fr Rafferty does not hear from them, then he will send the $1,000 total to the Archdiocesan appeal. Chile government says they are fine in comparison to the Haiti need so our focus should remain on Haiti. Examples of Columbia University projects would be joint projects that they can support with the parish, an example being the aid to an orphanage or school. But 5 weeks have elapsed with no further contact with the University. Spring Social – Tom Croft reported that he spoke with Jane Hart who had scheduled a Sat., March 13th meeting but that was not possible. Tom while referring to a calendar suggested some dates, but it is hard to choose. If social is close after Easter, young adults, students will be studying and/or graduate or preparing to leave, summer break. Fr. Rafferty asks the availability of the hospitality committee. Tom Croft will speak with Jane Hart of either having the spring social on Saturday, 5/1 or Saturday, 4/24. Father Rafferty is concerned of confirming a date so that raffle tickets can be prepared in time for weekend distribution. The selling of the raffle tickets is what generates more money coming in. There will be no distribution of the raffle tickets on Palm Sunday & Easter Sunday; there is just too much to do. Talk to the Young Adult group, for Fall/Spring dates of examinations. Tom Warren suggested the ticket price be raised above $20.00. After a discussion it was decided that the price will be the same. The quantity of food needs to be reviewed because there is just too much left over. The object of the Social is for parishioners to come together for a social occasion with profit being a secondary concern. Expenses should be covered. Conchita Gonzalez states that the parishioners who are good cooks prepare good food and that they measure the amount estimated to have full trays of food. Father Rafferty, a decision has to be made. The Council gave Tom Croft, after consulting with Jane Hart, the authority to make a decision on the date of the Social. The Green Proposal: Father Rafferty reminded us that Erin Biviano who is working at CU on environment issues came and spoke to the Council in Sept/Oct of 2009. We need to reach out and dialog with her. Marcia Ruiz, says she last spoke with Erin about TC 1st Earth Day April 2009 and received her info but I did not pursue further. Fr Rafferty stated then to pass on her information to someone here who could contact her. Connor presented a question upon which Fr Rafferty responded, more awareness, sponsor her to give a talk, open ended, Papal statement (that was handed out to review while she visited the council). Dorothy will reach out & Miriam will call. Marcia asked the question as to when does she celebrate Mass. Fr Rafferty replied that she and her husband with their 2 children celebrate mass on Sunday’s 8:30am and they live along 120th Street between Amsterdam Ave. & Morningside Drive, works at the hospital and works theology Notre Dame religion. Brenda says that perhaps something through the Merton Society; dialog. Miriam 1st will reach out then Brenda will follow up. New: Liturgy Committee Meeting Brenda says that flyers have been sent out for planning a retreat Saturday, March 20. Brenda says it is for all Spanish & English lectors and Eucharistic ministers. The mailing of flyers is based on mass schedules of all listed ministers for both. The retreat will cover guidelines. Date for April Parish Council Meeting: Monday, April 12th, 7:30pm Meeting Adjourned. Minutes prepared by Marcia Y. Ruiz
Parish Council Minutes Corpus Christi Parish Meeting of Monday, April 12, 2010
Absent were: Fr. Rafferty, Conchita Gonzalez, Miriam Gonzalez, Sam Bortka Present were: Tom Croft, Marcia Ruiz, Fr. Wizeman, Michael Morrison, Connor Hailey, Brian Questa, Tom Warren, Brenda Fairaday, Robert Meadows-Rogers, Dorothy Valla, Francis Paz Opening Prayer, Fr. Wizeman Approval of Monday, March 1st 2010 meeting: Brenda presented editing corrections; page 1, first paragraph, Merton is an event not a retreat. Brenda questioned the amount quoted on 2nd paragraph of $25,000.00 is not in full $10,000.00. Also what does it mean to say, that was not heard from Haiti in 5 weeks, needs clarification. Accept as amended, Robert Meadows-Rodgers, 2nd Fr. Wizeman. Pastor’s report: in Father Rafferty’s absence, no report was given. Principal’s report: the scaffolding is down, now placed on side of building. Plumbing and plumber contractors are urgent issues. As far as holes, there are openings, pipes are exposed, blockage that needs to be done, working on it tomorrow, Tuesday, 4/13. We have 3 new water fountains. Corpus Christi school is being featured on Ch.7; Pre-K was in the news broadcast Ch.7, Education with Art McFarland. We did receive a grant endowment given of $6,280.00 six windows to be done, inner-city endowment. We still need more money for other windows, convent and Cooke center needs new windows. Our benefit is coming up, I will send a mailing out to you all are invited to attend. The benefit is April 28, Weds, 6pm. Pete Hamill is the speaker. It is being held at the Mutual of Americas 56th street & Madison avenue. Walk-a-thon is scheduled for April 30, Friday. Connor and Michael have worked on this. The walk is from 10am-12pm, age appropriate walk, parents are preparing lunch upon their return. Student testing are coming up in late April & May. Tom Croft asked about enrollment: Re-register their children if by a specific date not registered then the price will go up. I may have to use this tactic into next year but I don’t want to do that at this point. We have pre-k through 8th grade, one school not a separate program; we are on board to open a second pre-K, 15-20 new enrollees, students we have close to 200. Spring Social: Tom spoke with Jane, entertainment, food, music is in the works. Tom made a sign up sheet so that per Mass, someone will give raffle tickets, receive tickets, sell the dinner tickets for the social. Committee reports: Maintenance: the front red doors does not open and close all the way. Red main doors there are cracks, door is warped, you have to kick the door open and leave a damaged visible crack on it. Michael Morrison says that the red doors are made of wood, cracks in the outer frame. George Grenier the building commissioner; the principal will call to see if the insurance will cover the costs of damages of the door, repairs of the door. Do not contact Roland he is not good in repairs. The copper to the outer top of church has been cleaned. Our two maintenance men on staff, Mr. Elibert and Antonio/Tony Echavarria are both retiring soon. Must be prepared for their exit and find replacements soon. Liturgy & Spiritual Committee: Robert Meadows-Rogers commented that the March 20th retreat we had a good response. Out of a list of 50-55 people, 30-35 people were receptive. Organized tables per interchange of English with Spanish/French; it worked well. The goal was functional pragmatic, faith functional, feel more committed, feel included. Noticed some changes example gracious of changing seats to accommodate another person, gracious change for more participation. Next meeting advent, faith sharing groups may be next lent. Education Committee: Brian Questa flyers, recruit teachers for the Sunday school. Now after Easter placing flyers at vestibule entrance of the church. Old & New Business: New business came from the desk of Fr. Rafferty, the Spanish committee with Conchita Gonzalez as leader, is requesting a flea market date in June 2010. There are too many activities already in place for each weekend of June and it does not look feasible; present this dialog to the council. Council response if there are no dates available then inform Conchita that a flea market cannot take place, so voted and moved to accept motion. Michael Morrison states to please stop calling the “flea market” “flea market” why not holiday bazaar, rummage sale, change the name. New Business: Brenda Fairaday presented a flyer for next Thomas Merton event to take place on Saturday, April 24, 1:30pm-4pm here at Corpus Christi. Meeting adjourned. Minutes by Marcia Ruiz Next Parish Council Meeting, Monday, May 3, 2010, 7:30pm.
Parish Council Minutes Corpus Christi Parish Meeting of Monday, May 3, 2010
Present: Fr. Raymond Rafferty, Fr. William Wizeman, Michael Morrison, Tom Warren, Robert Meadows-Rogers, Marcia Ruiz, Francis Paz, Connor Hailey, Conchita Gonzalez, Miriam Duran, Brenda Fairaday. Absent: Brian Questa, Dorothy Valla, Tom Croft, Sam Bortka The meeting was called to order by VP, Robert Meadows-Rogers and opened with a prayer by Fr. Rafferty. The secretary, Marcia Ruiz did not have the minutes for last month’s meeting of Monday, April 12 available for review at today’s meeting of Monday, May 3rd, 2010. Pastor’s Report, Fr. Rafferty: Fr. Rafferty opened up by saying that he heard all good news about the social; he heard the decorations were fantastic. For the social, Fr. Rafferty arrived towards the end because he was attending a previous outside the parish commitment. Fr. Rafferty as of today has not been given a financial report on the spring social. Maintenance: Father Rafferty received in the mail (which is new news to him) elevator inspection. An outside company to inspect the elevator; we have our own company and we have to run by the outside vendor. We are responsible for the outside vendor. The elevator must have a telephone included amount $8,727.00. Telephone emergency bell; this has to be looked into. To comply thus far, get a cellular phone if need be. Maintenance committee and lawyer to review this. Father Wizeman gave an example that while at Xavier someone was stuck in the elevator that luckily that person had a cellular phone on them so they were able to contact someone for help. #2, Concerning the building exterior, the front of the church area is finished. Now the two sides area facing west and east. On Friday, May 7th had a meeting. The scaffolding to be done by end of May 2010. Thursday, Friday, & Saturday remove rubble into the big bin outside and gone. Last meeting with contractor, go along with pigeon control spikes in windows and alleyways; those droppings on the windowsills is $4,500.00; the cost out of the $600,000.00 left from the diocese so we can use this. Little left since last September 2009 complete in May 2010 outside. Some insurance money remains for the inside. Dorothy and the Archdiocese are looking at what inside can be done with $45,000.0 insurance money. Reviewing the water damage, we have had 6 to 8 weeks of violent water, rain. Thus far, we have no proof of ruins of water. The playground in the roof area, the ceiling, the children will be using soon. This is where the rubble, debris had to be removed and they have improved the area. The tower has been cleaned and it is now visible cooper brown; it will turn green again due to the outer weather elements. Church door, is a continued problem with building commissioner. The door is not warped underneath the metal. Two weeks took out part that was warped. The left-hand side when you open difficult; the right side is not used. Brenda asked about the stone. Fr. Rafferty replied, that still needs to be looked at. The vast majority has been done. Mr. Elibert is retiring as of the 1st of July. Antonio Echavarria retiring as well by the end of the summer 2010. Michael Morrison and maintenance need to look at this issue. They were not paid a lot of money and we do not have a lot of money to offer. A job description is needed. Will it be two people, one person for both buildings church and school; the school needs to be involved too, the Principal and her input of job description. Neither positions were full-time, Ellibert would arrive 7:15am-2pm; he had no health insurance but was on his wife’s insurance. Ellibert used to get medical; some increase went to his salary. Antonio/Tony Echavarria not sure of his hours but his too was not full-time. Tony gets health insurance and medicare. If you have ideas for job description, who can be a likely candidate for employment, jot your ideas down via email, written so that we can review and respect time and one-on-one approaches to commit into a lengthy conversation on this issue. Budget deficit rose considerably. The church school large too $50,000.00 deficit church will do all right. The death of a parishioner their will left $60,000.00 for next year, 2011. Father Rafferty said, that the sexual abuse news broke out during Holy Week. Fr. Rafferty has spoken with the liturgical committee as to work on having a day of prayer, benediction/blessed sacrament in view, and fasting for reparations on this issue and to coincide with the Year dedicate to Priests June 2009 thru June 2010 as by Pope Benedict. We would like to see this day of observance to be Friday, June 11, the Feast day of the Sacred Heart; what do you say or think on this…unanimous, the council agreed that this day of observance take place. Tom asked to underscore, Robert Meadows-Rogers, the council is thankful to all who helped along with Jane for the spring social. Under the guidance of Fr. Rafferty accomplishments of the labor of all maintenance in rectory and church. The Advisory Board is obligated to raise $100,000.00 and the deficit will not be put in the Parish budget. The budget for the maintenance person is based on the salary. Principal’s Report, Dorothy Valla Submitted a one page sheet, in her absence detailing the following school subject matter: Walk-a-thon, benefit, windows, book fair, testing, enrollment. This goes back to when Former Attorney General Barr visited the school and wanted to help us get new computers through Verizon. Upon investigation, I learned that Verizon does not supply computers. There were other possibilities, but the impetus was lost. Last week, Sandy Wilson, from the Verizon Foundation visited the school unannounced and encouraged me to apply for another type of grant that would benefit our After School Program as well as the regular school program. I am currently working on this. 9. Fr. Rafferty may have more to report.
