simone1a     SIMONE WEIL

The French philosopher and mystic Simone Weil lived in this neighborhood for some months in 1942 and used to come to Corpus Christi Church to pray. Although of Jewish origins, she had long experienced a deep mystical feeling for the Catholic faith, along with a profound reluctance to join an organized religion.

While she enjoyed America, Weil soon felt compelled to return to Europe and share the suffering of her compatriots. She died in England in 1943 at the age of 34, having refused to eat more food than official French rations allowed.
