Early Music: Monica Huggett and Byron Schenkman

Corpus Christi Church

Monica Huggett, violin
Byron Schenkman, harpsichord
Toma Iliev, violin
Joanna Blendulf, viola da gamba

Leclair, Rameau, and the Age of Enlightenment

Monica Huggett and Byron Schenkman join Toma Iliev and Joanna Blenduff to form a lively quartet of top-notch early music performers. They offer the most virtuosic and tantalizing music of the French Baroque by Couperin, Leclair, and Rameau. These composers embraced both French and Italian style, a musical flowering that coincided with the Age of Enlightenment’s expansive and rational philosophies.

Post-concert Q and A

“Huggett seems to be able to put her finger on the exact character of each dance.… One is always made aware of the interplay between the contrapuntal lines, sometimes uncompromising, other times enticingly playful.”

—Vancouver Classical Music

“[Schenkman] chose challenging works and met each challenge with grace, speed, and precision—and that would be astonishing in itself—but the program moved along on passion as well and that was the evening’s defining feature.”
